The North African country of Algeria is known for its beautiful sandy beaches and is quite a popular place in the summer months as it sits along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. The Sahara Desert covers most of the land and features endless miles of sun and sand. The Hoggar mountain region and forests dominate the southern area of the country feature caves full of rock paintings that date back 10,000 years.

The country enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate and can get a little wet in the winter along the coast while the summers are generally quite dry. The country has a population of about 34 million people and the capital city is Algiers, with about three million. Other popular centers include Hassi Messaoud, Annaba, Oran, Constantine, Skikda, Bejaia, Ghradaia, Tiemcen, and Amenas.

The official languages are Berber and Arabic, however, French and English are often used in tourist areas and by the media. Algeria is the second-largest country in Africa and features about 750 miles of wonderful coastline when you’ll find numerous towns, and beach resorts where you’ll come across walled-in gardens, shops, mosques, and interesting monuments.


You’ll be able to see some ancient ruins around the country and they’re all in pretty good shape. In addition there are plenty of casbahs, palaces and Turkish houses. The Ethnographic and Local Art Museum is one of the best in North Africa, so is the National Museum of Fine Arts.

In the Sahara desert, you’ll likely come across nomadic tribes along with their herd of camels and goats. The country is mainly Islamic, and it’s a good idea to do a bit of research before going to learn about the customs. Most businesses are closed on holy days and during the months of Ramadan. Smoking and drinking are generally frowned upon but alcohol’s available in bars and hotels.

If you’re flying in, the main airport is in Algiers and there are several smaller ones around the country for internal travel, such as in Oran and Constantine. There are ports in Annaba, Algiers, Oran, Bejaia, and Skikda if you’re travelling there by sea. You can also reach the country by train as there’s a route between Tunisia and Algiers, with stops in Constantine and Annaba, and anther between Algiers and the Moroccan city of Marrakech. Bus services run from Morocco and Tunisia. You can also travel internally by rail, bus and road.

The food in Algeria is traditional fare that shows the historic influences of Arab, Berber, French, and Turkish cooking. A lot of flavorings can be used to make spicy dishes. However, you’ll also be able to find a good selection of international food in Algiers and many of the coastal town, especially Italian and French dishes and fresh seafood. Some of the best local dishes include kebabs, French bread, spicy sauces, couscous, chickpea-cakes, stews, vegetables, lamb, chicken, and cheese. Some of the most popular national drinks are mint tea, Turkish coffee and local wines.

There’s a pretty decent nightlife in the large towns at most of the hotel restaurants and nightclubs. Many of them feature traditional folk dancing and music. There are plenty of hotels to choose from in all price ranges and you’ll find some excellent resorts on the coast, especially in Oran.

Algeria offers visitors a wonderful combination of rich history, coastal resorts, excellent food and fantastic scenery. You’ll be able to find something interesting to see or do every hour of your trip.
