Revered and celebrated. Family and friends gather at my mom’s house (thanks mom for having the double ovens) on a weekend before Christmas to bake, listen to music, exchange recipes and laugh. So what do we bake? Cookies, of course!
We always bake a variety of sugar cookies, my great grandmothers honey cookie recipe (see recipe below), peanut butter cookies with Hershey Kisses and many, many more. It’s a true bake-a-thon. It is a day full of fun but one that does require some advance planning. This is why I use Find&Save to help me get ready for the day.

6 cups flour
2 Tbsp. cocoa
1 tsp. ea. nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger
1/2 tsp. ea. cloves, allspice, salt
1 cup sugar
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
1 cup crisco
2 beaten eggs
1/2 cup honey
2 tsp. baking soda, dissolved in 1/2 cup cold coffee
Everything should be mixed by hand. It really does make a difference. But if you insist, you can use an electric mixer for the liquid ingredients, but just use a wooden spoon once you start adding the dry ingredients.
Sift flour, cocoa and spices together and set aside.
Cream sugars and crisco together. Add beaten eggs, honey and coffee.
Gradually stir in flour mixture. Dough will get very stiff and hard to mix.
Divide into 3 or 4 sections, wrap in waxed paper and refrigerate overnight.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Roll dough to 1/8″-1/4″ thickness. Cut with cookie cutters. Bake until golden brown…approx 8-10 min. Cool completely before icing.
Powdered sugar (usually at least 2 boxes), add melted butter, cold coffee, and vanilla. Mix to desired consistency and taste. Spread icing on cooled cookies. Let icing set before placing cookies in closed container….layer with waxed paper to keep from sticking together. Put a crust of bread in the container…keeps cookies moist.
Optional: Sprinkle a little cinamon on top.
