South Korea Road Trips

One of the most interesting aspects of travelling is when you go on a road trip, driving along somewhere and turning a corner – then the scenery completely changes into something stunning. This is exactly the kind of experience that you will get to enjoy when driving along South Korea’s National Road 7.

Formally called the Republic of Korea, this East Asian country has a 600-year old capital which is Seoul. It also consists of a number of diverse cities including the second largest, port city of Busan; another port city which is Incheon; the ancient capital of the Silla Kingdom that is Gyeongju; and the cosmopolitan city of Daegu.

Although South Korea in general is a pleasant mixture of the old and the new, ancient Korean tradition still dominates – making it an even more interesting country to visit.

The Coastal Route: A Road Trip Itinerary for South Korea

Aside from the traditional tourist destinations that you can get to visit when travelling to South Korea, there’s a national highway that you can drive through which is lined with historical landmarks and must-stop-by places. It’s called the National Road 7 which stretches up to 350 kilometers, starting from Goseong to Busan.

Dotting National Road 7 are the following highlights:

Goseong’s Lighthouse Sports Park

Your first stop would be the Goseong Lighthouse Sports Park, located to the northernmost part of National Road 7.

Seaside Buddha

Next up is the huge stone Buddha which dominates the landscape to the east coast of the Unification Observatory. The Seaside Buddha is one of the most popular tourist spots in South Korea.

Goejin Harbor

No vacation would ever be complete without sampling what the local cuisine has to offer – and if you’re into fresh seafoods, then you should definitely stop by Goejin Harbor.

Geongbongsa Temple

Those who would like to venture a bit off the main road of National 7 can visit the Geongbongsa Temple. It’s about ten kilometres off the main road, and discovering this treasure of a place in all its remoteness simply adds to the experience.

Chodo-ri Seafood Center

Another must-visit seafood place is the Chodo-ri restaurant, where you can drop by before heading out to the Unification Observatory.

 Naksansa Temple

A magnificent view of the sea and an amazing temple depicting Buddhist architecture is your next stop as you drive by the Naksansa Temple.

Cheongganjeong Pavilion

Sitting high above a cliff is the Cheongganjeong Pavilion which is the perfect setting to watch the sun rise or set in this part of the world.

Chilpo Beach

If you’re simply driving by the entire National Road 7, you may not necessarily think about catching the waves at Chilpo Beach – but it is a must to stop by this gorgeous white beach, which gives the shores in Jeju Island a run for their money.

Yeongdeok Crab Town

One more way to fulfil your seafood craving is to drop by Yeongdeok Crab Town. The huge crab icon by the bridge which serves as an entrance to the town says it all.

“Beach with no Name”

Finally, there are dozens of remote beaches scattered through the length and breadth of National Road 7, such as a nameless one in Pohang. It’s a perfect way to cap off your journey through this extraordinary highway in South Korea.

The best route to take if you’re planning to drive through these sites on National Road 7 is to head straight to Gangneung. If you’re coming from Seoul, driving here takes about a couple of hours – National Road 7 runs from north to south.
