Source World travel The western African country of Cameroon sits in on the Gulf of Guinea and is home to about 19 million people. The capital city is Yaounde. However, Douala, with two million residents, is the largest city and considered to be the economic center of the country. Some other major centers are Limbe, Kribi, Buea, Dschang, Maroua, Rhumsiki, Mokolo, Koza, Mabas, and Mont Febe.

The country was run by Britain and France under a United Nations mandate and gained its independence in 1961. French and English are the official languages and Spanish is common in some areas along with about 200 African languages. The climate is ideal for outdoor sightseeing and activities as the average temperature is close to 80°F, but it can rain quite a bit between May and September in some regions.

The land is filled with remarkable landscapes and terrain and features some beautiful beaches, tropical rainforests, desert, mountains, national parks, volcanoes, rivers, jungle, waterfalls, reserves, lakes, savannah, and

flora and fauna. Some of the most popular outdoor spots are Mt. Cameroon for hiking, the beaches at Limbe and Kribi, and Waza National Park for its variety of wildlife.

The capital of Yaounde is located on seven hills and showcases some excellent shops, markets, cinemas, and hotels. There are some fine museums to learn about local culture and history, such as the Musee des Benedictins, and the National Museum of Yaounde. If you head to Mont Febe, you’ll find an exciting resort that features a casino, nightclub, luxury hotel, nightclub, golf course, and gardens.

There are plenty of things to see and do in Douala as well such as the shopping avenues, the cathedral, the Artisanat National market, the Deido market, the museum, the harbour, and Wouri Bridge. In fact, all of the major towns are filled with interesting scenery, shopping, culture, museums, and historical sites.

The wildlife is amazing and the Kalamaloue Reserve is an ideal place to catch a glimpse of dozens of different animals. Korup National Park and Bouba Ndjidah National Park are also must-see places to witness the natural beauty of Cameroon. In total, there are several reserves and seven national parks. There’s so much to see in the country that several photo safari tours are offered by the government.

Hiking around the mountains and countryside is quite popular as it allows visitors to stay active and take in some of the world’s best scenery. Africa Mount Cameroon is the favourite destination, as it’s the highest peak in West Africa. But while you don’t need any special equipment to scale it, you have to get a permit and a guide. It usually takes three to four days to reach the top and you can sleep out in huts. Other popular activities include fishing in the coastal areas and rivers along with swimming, tennis and golf. The favourite spectator sport by far is soccer.

If you’re travelling by air, the main airports are in Douala and Yaounde. There’s a ferry that crosses the Ntem River to Gabon and you can also cross to Equatorial Guinea. Railway travel is hard to get, but you can drive from the Central African Republic, Chad, Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria, and Gabon in the dry season. Minibuses and taxis run from Douala and Yaounde to neighboring countries. You can travel internally by bus, train, and car.

The food in Africa Cameroon is fantastic and there are plenty of restaurants in the larger cities. You can find international dishes including Asian, Lebanese, European, and African as well as small local chop houses. You can also get excellent fresh seafood on the coast. Some of the favorite dishes are manioc leaves, peanut soup, banana bread, spinach with meat, fried sweet potatoes and plantains, and beef with coconut and pineapple.

The nightlife in Yaounde and Douala is pretty vibrant with casinos, bars, nightclubs and hotels with live music. Hotels can be found in larger areas and there are some resorts, such as Mont Febe.
