The Queen is celebrating an unprecedented Platinum Jubilee in 2022, as she marks 70 years on the throne.
Elizabeth II, who turned 96 in April, is being honoured with an extensive programme of events, as well as an extra bank holiday across the UK.
The spring bank holiday, which usually takes place on the last Monday of May, has been moved to create a four-day weekend. Latest Met Office predictions
While it is too early to make firm predictions, the Met Office has suggested that the signs are promising.
More details will be available nearer the time, but current indications suggest temperatures will mostly be around average for the time of year, possibly slightly warmer in southern and western areas.
Any showers are likely to be in north or eastern regions.
Temperatures are set to remain pleasant this week, but rain and strong winds are expected to sweep across the country as a result of a strengthening of the jet stream, which plays a crucial role in driving weather systems towards the UK.
Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Dan Rudman said: “The strengthening of the jet stream increases the chances of low-pressure systems developing over the Atlantic being pushed towards the UK.
“Although there are still some details to be determined on the depth and timings of these lows, what we do know is that there’s some unsettled weather on the way next week, with some strong winds likely from the middle the week, especially in the north.
“Weather of this nature isn’t unusual in a UK spring, with changes in the jet stream frequently bringing interludes of unsettled weather.”
