Trabzon places to visit
Trabzon , the largest city in the Eastern Black Sea Region, was the capital of the last empire in Anatolia. It is accepted that Trabzon was founded in the same century by the colonists of Miletus who settled in Sinop in 756 BC . When Istanbul was occupied by the Crusaders in 1204, Alexios Komnenos, grandson of Byzantine Emperor Andronikos, came to Trabzon with his men.

With the help of his aunt Tamara, who is the Queen of Georgia, he declared himself the Byzantine Emperor in Trabzon. Even when Istanbul fell into the hands of the Byzantines again after 57 years, the successors of Komnenos did not give up their imperial claim. For this reason, this state, which was founded by Alexios Kommenos and went down in history as the Greek Empire of Trabzon, was accepted as the continuation of Byzantium in cultural and political terms. During this period, works of art worthy of a capital were built in the city.

Trabzon was like a small copy of Istanbul with its sheltered walls and palaces. That's why Fatih said that the conquest of Istanbul would not be completed without taking Trabzon. He also did what he said; besieged the city by land and sea. On August 15, 1461, the last emperor, David Kommenos, gave up and surrendered the city after a 42-day siege.

Trabzon became an international trade center in the first half of the 19th century. However, after the Suez Canal was opened in 1869 and the Batumi-Tbilisi railway was put into service in 1872, Trabzon Harbor lost its importance and the rise of the city stopped. At the beginning of the 20th century, there were 95 churches in Trabzon, where 19500 Turks, 8200 Greeks and 6000 Armenians lived. Now only one of them is open for worship. That is Sancta Maria Latin Catholic Church in Ä°skenderpaÅŸa (Ganita) Neighborhood.

Trabzon Places to Visit List:

Hagia Sophia

The most important structure from the years when Trabzon was the imperial capital, Hagia Sophia in Fatih DistrictManuel Kommenos, who wanted to prove that he was the real Byzantine emperor, had this structure built, which bears the same name as the imperial church in Istanbul. Three entrances have been given to Hagia Sophia with porches added to its three sides. On the exterior of the south porch, the creation of humanity is depicted with reliefs, which is the most impressive part of the building. It is known that the walls of the building were covered with frescoes in the past. 55 scenes of the extraordinarily beautiful frescoes dating to the end of the 13th century have survived. There is a three-storey bell tower about 30 meters west of Hagia Sophia. Inscriptions and tombstones brought from the surrounding historical buildings and the remains of a Roman temple are exhibited in the courtyard of Hagia Sophia, which was opened to visitors as a museum in 1964.

Fatih (Ortahisar) Mosque

Fatih (Ortahisar) Mosque in Ortahisar district was the main church of Panagia Hrisokephalos (Golden-headed Mary) Monastery. It is known that the building, which was converted into a mosque after the conquest, got its name from a picture of the Virgin Mary, made of mosaic and covered with gold. This place was both a kingdom and a metropolitan cathedral during the Greek Empire of Trabzon. Kings were crowned and buried here. In the past, its walls were decorated with frescoes and its floor with mosaics.

New Friday Mosque

Another place where the Trabzon emperors were crowned was the Hagios Eugenios church in the Citadel. The building, known to have been built in the 11th century, was named after Eugenios, who was considered the patron saint of the city at that time. After conquering the city, Fatih performed the first Friday prayer here, and the church he converted into a mosque was named Yeni Friday Mosque.
