Marriott's New Hotel Openings in Canada for 2022 - Six hotels in the works including the W Toronto & The Dorian, Autograph Collection Calgary

Welcome to Part Two of our series on new hotel openings in Canada for 2022! In this part we take a look at Marriott Hotels who are taking a bit of a breather compared to the past several years with new hotel  openings. Having added well over 40 new hotels between 2019 and 2021, Marriott is planning on only opening six new hotels in Alberta, Nova Scotia and Ontario. So let's take a look at what they have in store for this year.

🏨 Rwrds reminder: Marriott's New Hotel Openings in Canada for 2021 - 10 hotels in the works including the W Toronto & Humaniti Hotel Montreal  🏨

With nearly 8,000 hotels Marriott Hotels is one of the largest hotel companies in the world and they are one of, if not the biggest in Canada. The chain comprises of 30 brands ranging from mid-level budget locations to high end luxury resorts.  Here in Canada we currently have 22 of their brands operating and will see one more brand added to that list when two Moxy hotels open up.

2022 will be a quieter year for Marriott in Canada as they look to add a half dozen properties to their Canadian portfolio. Overall these six hotels will bring their portfolio to over 270 properties in Canada. On the list for openings this year as it has been for the past couple of years is the W Toronto. This hotel was originally set to open in 2020 however the construction slow down due to the pandemic pushed the opening back to 2021 and then even further to this year with plans to open in few months from now.

Here are the six hotels planned for 2022 in order of their anticipated opening date.

HIGHLIGHTS:

W Toronto

Borrowing a line from the past two year's posts I would say the most anticipated hotel opening will be the W Toronto. According to Marriott's site the W is slated to open in Marc however nights are not bookable until June 1st. This is 11 months after the planned opening dates we initially published last year. Fingers crossed it works out for Marriott to open this much anticipated hotel this year!

The W Toronto will have 255 rooms on 9 floors and is located in the Yorkville neighbourhood at 90 Bloor Street East and takes inspiration from social, historical and physical insights and embeds elements of each into the rooms and spaces. Guests will be immersed in a modern biophilia and laboratory-style experience, with breathtaking indoor/outdoor spaces. The hotel will feature multiple food and beverage venues including a lobby bar and lounge with a DJ booth, recording studio and a coffee and cocktail bar.

The W is currently listed as a Category 6 hotel in the Marriot Bonvoy program meaning you'll require 50,000 points per night at the standard level (40,000 off peak/60,000 peak). You only have a couple of months to book at these actual rates as sometime in March Marriott Bonvoy is moving to dynamic pricing. Marriott has promised that 97% of hotels will price in their previous set rates for 2022 so hopefully this will be the case for the W for this year. After 2022 there is still no idea of what will transpire.

Being a Category 6 unfortunately means it will be out of reach for the annual free night award that comes with the Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card - however the welcome bonus on the card is 50,000 points so that could be utilized for one night at this new location. There is alright availability throughout June and July at the standard 50,000 point level. Here's the June availability (current as of January 25, 2022):

We checked out one random night to compare the 50,000 point rate versus the cash rate and the points represent a really good value.  On Friday July 8th you can redeem 50,000 points for a 'Spectacular 2 Queen Room" which has an all in cash price of $780. That means your redemption value would be 1.56 cents per point. Here at Rewards Canada we value Marriott Bonvoy points at a minimum of 1 cent each so this would be considered a good points redemption.

The next big anticipated Marriott opening this year is The Dorian, Autograph Collection Calgary. This is second Autograph Collection hotel in Alberta after the Kananaskis Mountain Lodge. We also include the Courtyard here as it is part of the same building. The Courtyard will make up the lower half of this new building (there is actually a live webcam of the construction) while the Dorian will make up the upper half of this tower and will feature Calgary's first high rise lobby on the 27th floor. It will feature 135 rooms that blend modern luxury and as Marriott told us "British whimsy and local flavour" which is evident in the photo of one of the guest rooms:

For dining the Dorian's features The Wilde, which will be the only roof top restaurant and lounge with an outdoor heated patio in Calgary and Prologue which is a resto-lounge "offering specialty beverages and fresh flavors during the day to local signature offerings in the evening."

The lower half of the building will be the 170 room Courtyard by Marriott Calgary Downtown and is described to us by Marriott as

... the newest hotel in the center of bustling downtown Calgary, located in the heart of the business district and close to all services and amenities. The modern state-of-the-art lobby at Courtyard provides greater flexibility and choices for our guests. You'll enjoy our inviting, flexible spaces where you can work or relax with free Wi-Fi throughout. At the center of it all is Bistro Novelle, where guests gather for an energizing breakfast, or dinner and crafted cocktails during the evening. The Crate market is available day or night, a convenient grab & go option. Guests can recharge in the comfort of our newly designed contemporary rooms, complete with everything you need to work or unwind. Our spacious well-equipped fitness center will help you stay refreshed and energized.

Moxy Banff

We actually covered the Moxy Banff back in 2019 (read more here) when it was announced that it will  be the first Moxy Hotel in Canada. This location is not a new build but a renovation and revamp of the Banff Voyager Inn which has been welcoming guests since 1964.  Initially it was set to open by May 2021 but like many hotels I'm guessing the pandemic threw a wrench into that plan. The hotel will be owned and operated by Canalta Hotels and this is how it is described:

"We will be doing a very extensive renovation, taking it down to the bones and adding 12 rooms and underground parking to the back." They will take some meeting space from the original building to make some lofts, for a total of 106 rooms.

One key feature will be the bar. "Guests can check in at the bar," Christianson said. "We'll have a large and very interesting heated pool and hot tub in the courtyard. It will be an activated area with fireplaces. There's a pool there now, but it will be redone." There will also be a big emphasis on games in the lobby.
The rooftop will also be a "pretty awesome space with a bar and fire pits," said Christianson, adding that there's nothing there now. "The view will be amazing. It will offer a chance for guests to get outside all year, with fun, games and family activities."

The rooftop will also be available for events, small weddings and corporate parties. The bar will be enclosed and the rest open. There will also be see-through igloos, plus a rooftop hot tub, steam room and sauna. This spa area will be branded.

Moxy Halifax Downtown

Just like the Moxy Banff, the second Canadian Moxy Hotel is set to open in the last quarter of the year. Unlike the Banff location, the Moxy Halifax Downtown is a new build and will feature 160 rooms. There isn't a lot of info about this location just yet although a recent press release from the developers tells us this:

The Moxy Halifax will bring a stylish and playful new hotel to the local downtown area where guests can make memories over handcrafted drinks, small plates and vibrant music. Boldly breaking the rules of a conventional hotel stay, Moxy is well-suited for the urban/metro area of Downtown Halifax with unexpected activations as soon as guests arrive, including checking-in at Bar Moxy.

The hotel is situated near the downtown waterfront along Cogswell Street, home to several iconic attractions and must-do tours, including Scotiabank Centre, Casino Nova Scotia, Harbour Hopper, Emera Oval, Halifax Public Gardens, and the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site.

If you are planning on staying at any one of these new hotels or any Marriott Hotel for that matter remember to use the Marriott Bonvoy™ American Express®* Card or the Marriott Bonvoy™ Business American Express® Card to pay for your stay as it will earn you 5 points per dollar spent at Marriott Hotels. This includes dining, spa and other hotel spending so long as you bill them to your room.

Also remember to take advantage of Marriott Bonvoy bonus points offers that are available to members of the program. At the time of posting this Marriott just revealed their next big promotion which awards 1,000 bonus points & double elite night credit on every night completed. You do have to register by Apr 20 for stays Feb 8 – May 4, 22 so this current bonus will only cover the new Fairfield Inn North Bay but you can still earn it for stays at any other Marriott Hotels. Marriott does run other promotions as well but those can be hard to find on their site so Rewards Canada has do ne the legwork for you by finding and listing those offers on our Marriott Bonvoy Bonus Points page.

Wrapping it up

Even though 2022 will be a quieter year for new hotels from Marriott they do have some very anticipated properties coming on line. We should finally see the much awaited opening of the W Toronto,  a much needed higher end luxury hotel in Calgary's downtown core with The Dorian and we get not one but two Moxy hotels this year as well. And we won't forget about you North Bay, you get the Fairfield Inn and Suites which looks to be needed in a town dominated by Hilton and Wyndham! Finally if you are looking for new Marriott hotels beyond 2022 our research did find that Ottawa will be getting an AC Hotel in 2023 and Montreal will also get a Moxy Hotel in 2024.
