It weaves a maze of waterways and wide-open channels along the Utah-Arizona border. Red sandstone walls give way to the bright sky that comes alive with stars at night. In a wild landscape like this, thunderstorms often move quickly and without warning.

Lake Powell Hole in the Wall

Lake Powell,
Lake Powell,

Lake Powell is one of the largest lakes in the United States and has 2,000 miles of shoreline. Over millions of years, natural elements have transformed the sandstone landscape into a grand canyon. Built in 1963, the Glen Canyon Dam supported the Colorado River and created Lake Powell as it is today. Some travelers may know Lake Powell from an iconic image of Horseshoe Bend below the Glen Canyon Dam, where you can see one of the area's iconic goose necks from a panoramic perspective.

With travelers looking to get away from the cities and venture into the remote wilderness, there are several reasons why Lake Powell is the best place to consider when it's safe to travel again.

WATER MEETS THE WILD WEST

Last night, my friends and I opened Once Upon a Time in the West, a Western classic that so prominently captures the beauty of the American Southwest. Wide, open landscapes with rusty dirt and stacked geological hills - there's no place like it. Lake Powell is where this side of the wild west meets fresh water. Fish thrive in the lake itself, although the landscape is barren except for the most hardy plants and land creatures. The striking contrast adds an element of beauty not found in forested lakes or waterless deserts.

STARS LIKE YOU'VE NEVER SEEN

Renting a houseboat and entering the San Juan arm of Lake Powell will take you to a very special and very remote part of the lake, chances are you won't be able to find cell phone service. According to the National Park Service, 80 percent of Americans can no longer see the Milky Way from where they live. Accessible darkness is becoming a scarce resource thanks to big city living and increasing urbanization. Whether you're camping along the shoreline at Lake Powell or sleeping on the deck of a houseboat, looking at the night sky will reveal constellations and shooting stars. Rainbow Bridge, one of the largest natural arches in the world, has been designated as a Dark Sky Conservation Area by the International Dark Sky Association.

ADVENTURE

The mirror-flat water of Lake Powell can be explored in a rowboat, standing paddle board, or at the helm of a boat. A waterski and wakeboarder paradise, Lake Powell's narrow canyons drown out wind waves and water currents created by other boats (in parts of the lake you could go days without seeing another boat). And if you prefer to explore on foot, there's usually a great view of the lake at the top of any nearby hill or hill. It's not unusual to climb a red rock and find a cave or a full hole in the cliff.

AMAZING DATE

The National Park Service estimates that Lake Powell has been inhabited for more than 11,000 years. Artifacts such as sandals, baskets, pottery, and cliff carvings are to be seen in Glen Canyon, which includes part of Lake Powell. The cliff dwellings created by the Ancestral Puebloans can still be seen today.

And if you're interested in going even further back in time, all you have to do is look around. Layers of rock in the walls of Glen Canyon have revealed fossils of past life forms such as dinosaurs that date back to the Mesozoic Era 65 million years ago.

Lake Powell Reviews

We took three dogs with us and rowed in a powerful boat. The lake was beautiful. The view was amazing! However, there was an approaching storm so we only paddled for an hour. We will go again next year in order not to spoil our adventurous excitement.

Magical, out of this world, masterpiece, awe-inspiring….a few words that come to mind when I think of this beautiful place. When we went, the waters were far below the historical average and although this was deplorable, the much more natural beauties of the canyons were visibly available for your viewing pleasure. God has outdone himself here. Go canoeing early in the morning to absorb all the natural beauty before the crowds arrive and in its calmest moments. You won't be disappointed.

Once again, I am extremely pleased with the Lake Powell experience, but this time I am even more satisfied with what myself and my family have encountered on the Bullfrog Marina and Utah side of the lake. Due to the declining level of the lake water, it offers even more astonishing and magnificent view of the underwater caves, leaving you speechless and in awe. I strongly recommend those who have never been here to add this extraordinary lake to their bucket list.

Maybe this wasn't the best year to go. The water level was at an all-time low and the traffic on the lake was very heavy. At the south end, only the wahweap and antelope were throttled, so you couldn't get very far. The water was very choppy in the canals due to all the traffic. Good beach spots were getting harder and harder to find, and every place we went was missed. On top of that, the houseboat we rented without wahweap boat rental did not have an awning because it exploded in a previous charter. After arguing for several hours, they tried their best to adapt. They covered some sheets for cover as it was 98 degrees all week but it was humiliating when we saw other boaters laughing as they passed. They told us our boat was only 10 years old but it was awful. We also checked the paperwork and found that he was at least 20 years old and felt every ounce of it. Make sure to skip the M boats and get a Z boat. The water in the boat came out as a stream too small to do anything but fill a glass every 5 minutes. Fortunately, we were with a family that had a reverse osmosis Z boat and could take water. We literally had to wash dishes and shower in lake water!

Despite that, we had a good time and I'm sure it would have been much better at other times. Research the boats and check the water levels.
