The new coronavirus travel restrictions had an unexpected byproduct, creating a new record for the longest flight in the world in terms of distance traveled.
According to CNN and The Points Guy, Air Tahiti Nui, a small long-distance transport company based in French Polynesia, has the newest title thanks to a one-time uninterrupted flight from Papeete to Paris on Sunday. The flight was extended to 9,775 miles.
Sales points reported that the Air Tahiti Nui flight usually stops in both directions to refuel and pick up passengers, but the US has chosen to skip the stop due to recently announced travel restrictions.
"This flight was on an exceptional basis and within the restrictions imposed by the American authorities in the face of the Covid-19 outbreak," the airline issued to CNN said.
The USA reached Air Tahiti Nui for comment today.
Flight TN64 departed from Fa'a'ā International Airport in Tahiti at 2:56 a.m. local time and landed at Paris's Charles de Gaulle airport the next day at 5:48 p.m. according to flight tracking site FlightAware. Total travel time is 15 hours 52 minutes.
The border between Canada and the United States will be closed for non-mandatory travel.
President Donald Trump confirmed the news in a tweet Wednesday morning. "With mutual consent, we will temporarily close our Northern Border with Canada to non-essential traffic. Trade will not be affected. Details to follow!" Trump tweeted.
"I spoke to President Trump this morning and agreed that both Canada and the US will temporarily restrict all unnecessary travel across the Canadian-US border," Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said at a press conference Wednesday morning. Said.
Vice President Mike Pence said on Wednesday that the decision was "with mutual consent".
According to the U.S. State Department, U.S. flights to Canada will fly as planned, but passengers will face dredging. Those who arrive must isolate on their own for 14 days, and those who show symptoms are not allowed to enter Canada.
