Sao Luis is a city in the state of Maranhao and its capital city in northeastern Brazil. Sao Luis has a population of about 1 million inhabitantsand an area of 827 square kilometers. It is located 4 meters above sea level on the Atlantic Ocean’s coast in a beautiful and picturesque bay. The first Europeans who came to the area of the city are the French, who are trying to establish a colony here in 1612 but it was conquered by the Portuguese in 1615.
Historic center of Sao Luis retains the rectangular disposal of its streets. Due to a period of economic stagnation in the early twentieth century, an extremely large number of its wonderful historic buildings have been preserved. This is a typical example of Iberian colonial town and really beautiful and attractive for travelers from all over the world. The city is important cruise destination for passenger vessels, visiting the South American country, but also can be reached by place, as the airport is located on some 13 km from the center of the city. The city is beautiful and kept its traditions, so you will enjoy to make a tour in it. There are wonderful beaches, historical rich center, museums, art galleries and concert halls.
The beaches of Sao Luis are enormous tidal variation, as the most popular one is Ponta d’Areia, b ut also pretty wide and beautiful are the Sao Marcos and Calhau, which are about 5 kilometers long offering large variety of simple bars and restaurants and also a broad pavement by the road. Brazil is a country, which is good known with the beaches and great accommodation options. So here there are comfortable and luxury hotels, which will host you and give you top class service. Also there are great rental rooms, and cheaper class hotels, which are not bad at all.
When traveling in Sao Luis definitely should not miss to visit the old town, which is one of the main attraction of the city. Here you will see a large variety of colonial architecture, which is kept through the centuries and will show you the rich history of the city. Of course most of the buildings in the old town need of refurbishing, but maybe this will give you better vision to the colonial life.
