LONDON FOLLOWS BEIJING”S LEAD ON TOURISM

Britain”s reputation as a top tourist destination could be emphasised further in the coming years as an agency attempts to promote the country.

VisitBritain, the national tourism organisation, announced it is to build the location”s visitor economy following the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

It said it will promote Britain as an ideal destination to participate in and watch sporting events ahead of the Olympic Games 2012.

According to the International Passenger Survey and reported by VisitBritain, one in ten overseas visits involves these activities.

VisitBritain”s chief executive Tom Wright explained the aim to make tourism a great benefit of the 2012 games and how this summer”s event would help.

"[The games in Beijing this summer mark] the first stage of our strategy to spread the economic benefits of the Olympics throughout the UK and raise the profile and awareness of Britain as a destination," he said.

Meanwhile, a new poll published today discovered that over a third of Brits still plan to go abroad this year despite the credit crunch.

The research, conducted for the BBC, also found Spain to be the most popular destination for UK-based tourists

London – Ride the London Eye, visit the Tower of London or take a day out the city to see Stonehenge.
